The Major League Baseball rules were so strict that the team colors of black and white were all he could don—he remembers being told to Sharpie in white areas on his cleats to make them fully black.

Team Israel left-hander Alex Katz expresses himself as a baseball player on the mound with his arm. When he’s not pitching, he expresses his creative talents through the cleats worn by players throughout baseball (and beyond). Katz is the founder of Stadium Custom Kicks, a custom footwear company whose design work can be seen on the feet of more than 1,000 celebrities and athletes across all sports.

Like thousands of other Minor League Baseball players across the United States, Alex Katz is unable to play the game he loves this summer. Signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Royals organization on Feb. 11, the 25-year-old left-handed relief pitcher was at the Triple-A during Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz. when baseball was shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic a month later.

In Saturday’s All-Star Futures Game, Marcelo Mayer impressed with a single, stolen base, and solid defense, but his footwear had people talking almost as much as his footwork. Starting at shortstop in the annual showcase of the most promising stars of tomorrow, the Red Sox No. 1 prospect donned a pair of bespoke cleats, one painted with his native San Diego, the other bearing the future he’s working towards, Fenway Park. On the latter, the iconic Nike Swoosh was embellished with game-used dirt from the field of America’s oldest and most beloved ballpark.

Juan Soto dressed for the occasion during the Yankees' home opener on Friday, as he sported a pair of New York City-themed cleats. The Under Armour pair was designed by Stadium Custom Kicks and featured New York City's skyline, the subway stop at Yankee Stadium and pinstripes. Meanwhile, the sole declared that Soto loves his new home.
